EDUCATION

BUILDING A SCHOOL

When we visited Guinea-Bissau in November 2024, we discovered children gathering every day on a simple village veranda for lessons in an unregistered school. Today, that school has around 70 pupils and three dedicated—but unqualified—teachers.

Our vision is to provide these children with a proper school building. This will mean purchasing land, constructing classrooms, digging a well for clean drinking water, and installing toilets. We also hope to offer pupils a daily meal, provide monthly healthcare days, and use the building as a Sunday school each week.

Beyond the building itself, we want to support the school’s growth by helping teachers gain formal qualifications, developing a curriculum, and printing school workbooks.

We hope to link the school with a local sports ministry by developing a football academy that already exists.

Phase 1:

We have been offered land and are looking to raise £20,000 to purchase it and to wall it in, as per local regulations.

Phase 2:

Design a school with toilets, gardens (to provide food for school dinners), teacher’s accommodation and then build it.

Phase 3:

We want to employ qualified staff and develop the school day to include a daily meal, monthly healthcare day and weekly Sunday school.

Phase 4:

To develop a curriculum with resources that teachers can use for Years 1-6 and to offer staff training.

SUPPORTING EXISTING SCHOOLS

Many schools are under-resourced and under-financed. Staff not receiving their government salaries is the biggest reason that the education system is broken. We desire to support existing schools to continue to function and to bring them up to a standard where pupils can complete their education to level 6.

TEACHER TRAINING INITIATIVE

The plan is to network with other schools in the area, share resources and offer regional staff training days.

SPORTS

FOOTBALL ACADEMY

There has been an unofficial sports ministry with a training academy for boys from 2010. The desire is to formalise a “New Hope Football Academy”, connected initially to the school in Canchungo. Here boys will receive football training from trained coaches, receive mentoring/discipleship and hear God’s Word each day.
